Michele Im Background

Michele Im is a Korean-American ceramic artist based out of Queens, New York. In her eyes, earthenware is a very primitive material, but when the surface is dressed, it can become elegant. She uses ceramics traditions such as Italian Maiolica and Delftware and draws from animal motifs to create her work. Her project ‘RATSxCHICKS’ uses animals but pairs them in combinations with very out of the ordinary designs. In these pieces, she pulls from fantasy and humor to create very colorful work that takes the shapes of the animals she references. She graduated from the State University of New York at Buffalo with a degree in biology and art. She liked this combination of studies and worked in public schools before working in restaurants and then starting ceramics.
